It ranks third because it combines the highest brand trust among the top 10 with the greatest regulatory scrutiny in the United Kingdom: its subsidiary, CB Payments Limited, is authorized by the FCA as an electronic money institution, in addition to being registered under the MLR regime for crypto-related activities.

It ranks fourth for being the most comprehensive multi-asset offering in the top 10, and for a rather unusual fact: it obtained its registration with the FCA by integrating Trustology, an already-registered crypto custody firm, rather than applying for registration from scratch.
Instant buying and selling incurs a 1.49% fee, while Bitpanda Fusion (its Pro version) charges as low as 0.02% for makers. Its crypto fees start at a minimum spread of 1%, which is higher than that of exchanges specializing in spot trading. How are cryptocurrencies taxed in the United Kingdom in 2026?
The United Kingdom does not have a specific tax on cryptocurrencies: HMRC treats them as property, not as currency, so the general rules for Capital Gains Tax (CGT) and Income Tax apply. The key factor is the type of transaction: selling for pounds, exchanging one cryptocurrency for another, spending cryptocurrency on purchases, or giving it away (except to your spouse or civil partner) are considered dispositions subject to CGT; buying with pounds and holding the asset without selling it is not taxable.
Depending on the type of transaction, the following rules apply for fiscal years 2025/26 and 2026/27:
- Capital Gains Tax (CGT): Gains from selling or exchanging cryptocurrencies are taxed at 18% (basic tax bracket) or 24% (top tax bracket), after applying the Annual Exempt Amount of £3,000, a threshold shared with the rest of your capital gains for the year and which cannot be carried over from one year to the next.
- Reporting threshold even below the exemption: You must report your transactions even if your net profit is less than £3,000, if the total gross amount of your sales exceeds £50,000 during the tax year.
- Income Tax (mining, staking, and crypto payments): This income is taxed as ordinary income at the 0%, 20%, 40%, or 45% rate, depending on the tax bracket, and is valued in pounds at the time of receipt.
- Pooling rules and the 30-day rule: HMRC requires that purchases of the same asset be pooled to calculate the average cost, with a special rule that prevents you from counting the same purchase twice if you repurchase the same asset within 30 days of a sale.
Everything is reported through the Self-Assessment form, in the specific section for cryptoassets provided on the form, with a filing and payment deadline of January 31. The most sensible approach is to keep your own record of purchases, sales, and acquisition dates in British pounds, and report everything to HMRC within that time frame.
How did we selected the exchanges in this ranking
This ranking was compiled based on a comparative analysis of cryptocurrency exchanges available to customers in the United Kingdom, combining real-world usage tests with technical, regulatory, and user experience evaluations to identify those best suited for users residing in the United Kingdom in 2026.
To compile the ranking, we evaluated each platform based on the following criteria:
| Criteria | What We Evaluate | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Regulation and Verification of Registration | We verify each entity's listing in the FCA's public registry of cryptoasset firms under the MLR, and whether it also holds full authorization as an investment firm or an electronic money institution. |
| 2 | Preparing for the New FSMA Regulations | We are assessing indications that the platform is preparing to apply for FSMA authorization, for which the application window opened on September 30, 2026, ahead of the full regime taking effect on October 25, 2027. |
| 3 | Tax Adjustment | Clarity in transaction reports regarding the Capital Gains Tax and the crypto assets section of the Self-Assessment, and ease of applying the Annual Exempt Amount of £3,000. |
| 4 | Transactions in British pounds | Smooth processing of deposits and withdrawals in GBP via Faster Payments or card, and settlement times. |
| 5 | Actual Trading Costs | Actual trades on each platform, taking into account the combined cost of commissions, spreads, and withdrawal fees—not just the advertised rate. |
| 6 | Track Record and Transparency | Each exchange's security track record and transparency in disclosing reserves (Proof of Reserves), where applicable. |
The testing was completed in September 2026, with a final check of the records listed in the FCA’s public registry of cryptoasset firms as of the publication date. You can review the full research and data verification process in our methodology.
Important note: We review this ranking periodically based on new FSMA authorization applications, changes in commissions, or tax updates from HMRC. Rankings are subject to change.
Regulation of exchanges and cryptocurrencies in the United Kingdom
In September 2026, the United Kingdom will face its most significant regulatory milestone since the crypto sector came under the supervision of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). As of January 10, 2020, any cryptoasset exchange provider or custodial wallet provider operating in the country must register with the FCA under the Money Laundering Regulations (MLR), a regime focused exclusively on anti-money laundering, not on prudential or conduct supervision. On June 30, 2026, the FCA published its final rulebook (Cryptoassets Regulations 2026) under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (FSMA), and on September 30, 2026, the application window opened for firms to apply for the new full authorization, with a deadline of February 28, 2027.
The new FSMA regime will take full effect on October 25, 2027, and as of that date, all platforms operating in the United Kingdom—including those already registered under the MLR—will need this specific authorization for activities such as trading, custody, or the issuance of qualified stablecoins. Until then, MLR registration remains the minimum mandatory requirement for operating. In addition, the crypto financial promotion regime has been in effect since October 2023, requiring exchanges to include clear risk warnings and, in some cases, a 24-hour cooling-off period for new users.
The information presented in this ranking is for informational and educational purposes only. It does not constitute financial or tax advice, nor is it a personalized investment recommendation.
