How are cryptocurrencies taxed in Italy in 2026?
Italy does not have a specific tax on cryptocurrencies: capital gains are considered “redditi diversi” of a financial nature and are taxed through a substitute tax. The key factor is the timing of the transaction: selling for euros or paying with crypto generates a capital gain, while some swaps between cryptocurrencies may be tax-neutral under the 2026 Budget Law, so it’s advisable to review each case individually. Buying with euros or transferring funds between your own wallets is not subject to tax.
Depending on the type of transaction, different rules apply:
- 33% Substitute Tax (effective January 1, 2026): Here are the capital gains and returns from staking and lending on cryptoassets in general. The €2,000 tax exemption was eliminated on January 1, 2025, and capital losses can be offset against capital gains over the following four years.
- 26% rate for euro-denominated stablecoins: The 2026 Budget Law (Law No. 199/2025) maintains this reduced tax rate for euro-denominated electronic money tokens that comply with MiCA.
- RW and IVCA Table (assets outside Italy): Cryptocurrencies held in custody on foreign exchanges or in personal wallets must be reported on Form RW, subject to a tax on the value of crypto-assets (IVCA) of 0.2% of their value.
- Tax Administration Regime (Tax Withholder): As of April 15, 2026, CryptoSmart is the first Italian exchange to calculate, withhold, and pay your taxes for you, with no obligation to file a tax return. Other international exchanges do not offer this service.
The European DAC8 directive has been in effect since January 2026: exchanges are already collecting their customers’ data and will submit the first reports in 2027—covering transactions from 2026—so that the Agenzia delle Entrate can cross-check them with your tax return. Keep an eye on the calendar: capital gains from 2025—which are reported this fall—are still taxed at the 26% rate with no exemption, while those realized on or after January 1, 2026, are taxed at the 33% rate. The most sensible approach is to keep your own record of purchases, sales, and commissions, calculate your gains using the LIFO method (the most recent units are sold first), and report everything on the Modello Redditi Persone Fisiche to the Italian Revenue Agency by October 31.
How did we selected the exchanges in this ranking
This ranking was compiled based on a comparative analysis of MiCA-authorized cryptocurrency exchanges available to customers in Italy, combining real-world usage tests with technical, regulatory, and user experience evaluations to identify those best suited for users residing in Italy in 2026.
To compile the ranking, we evaluated each platform based on the following criteria:
| Criteria | What We Evaluate | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | License Regulation and Verification | We only include exchanges with full MiCA authorization, verifying each operator in the public registries of CONSOB and ESMA, including the services covered by their license and whether they operate under a European passport or direct authorization in Italy. |
| 2 | Support in Italian and localization | Availability of customer service in Italian, quality of the interface, and educational resources in the local language. |
| 3 | Tax Adjustment | Clarity in operational reports for the calculation of capital gains using the LIFO method, the Quadro RW, and the IVCA, and compatibility with DAC8 reporting. |
| 4 | Transactions in euros and SEPA funds | Smooth deposits and withdrawals via SEPA and SEPA Instant from Italian accounts, settlement times, and compatibility with cards and mobile wallets. |
| 5 | Actual Trading Costs | Actual trades on each platform, taking into account the combined cost of commissions, spreads, and withdrawal fees—not just the advertised rate. |
| 6 | Track Record and Transparency | Each exchange's security track record and transparency in the disclosure of reserves (Proof of Reserves). |
The testing was completed in September 2026, with a final verification of the licenses in effect in the public registries of CONSOB and ESMA as of the publication date. You can view the complete data research and verification process on our methodology.
Important note: We review this ranking periodically based on new authorizations from CONSOB, improvements in Italian support, or tax changes. Rankings are subject to change.
Regulation of Exchanges and Cryptocurrencies in Italy
Platforms offering cryptocurrency services in Italy operate under the European MiCA regulation, which applies to service providers as of December 30, 2024, and has been transposed into Italian law by Legislative Decree No. 129/2024. The CONSOB authorizes and supervises cryptoasset service providers based in Italy, in close coordination with the Bank of Italy, which also receives notifications from banking intermediaries. As of June 30, 2026, CONSOB had authorized eight CASPs: CheckSig, Conio, CryptoSmart, Hercle, Hodlie, Olliv Italia, Riv Digital, and Young Platform, in addition to the notification from Banca Sella.
The transitional period ended on July 1, 2026, and since then, only platforms authorized by CONSOB or by another European authority with a MiCA passport—and listed in the ESMA registry—may offer services in Italy. Binance, which withdrew its license application in Greece, has restricted its services to Italian users: it only allows them to close positions and withdraw funds, and assures users that it will not freeze their assets. Before depositing money on an exchange, check that the service provider is listed in the ESMA registry.
Important note: Binance does not appear in this ranking because it does not have a MiCA license. As of July 1, 2026, it is not accepting new users or deposits in Italy and only allows withdrawals.
The information presented in this ranking is for informational and educational purposes only. It does not constitute financial or tax advice, nor is it a personalized investment recommendation. Using cryptocurrency exchanges involves risks, and each user is responsible for assessing which platform best suits their profile, as well as for complying with applicable regulations and their legal and tax obligations under current Spanish law.
