About Bitvavo: a proposal focused on the European market
Bitvavo was born in Amsterdam in 2018 and has become one of the main European exchanges, especially on the euro market. Currently operates in 25 European countries and exceeds 2 million users, with a proposal focused on facilitating the operation of cryptocurrencies for the European public.
As of June 2025, it operates under a MiCA license, granted by the Netherlands Financial Markets Authority (AFM). This authorization allows it to offer its services throughout the European Union under a single regulatory framework, with requirements for investor protection and safekeeping of funds.
Who is Bitvavo for? For users in the European Union who want to buy, sell, and earn returns on cryptocurrencies in euros, with competitive fees and MiCA regulation.
Advantages:
- European focus and native euro operations
- SEPA Deposits and Withdrawals
- Fees among the lowest in all of Europe
Disadvantages:
- Customer service without phone
- Staking and Web3 wallet outside of MiCA
- Only available in 25 European countries
Where is Bitvavo available? 25 European countries
Bitvavo is available in 25 European countries: 24 from the European Union plus Norway. It is one of the largest crypto platforms on the continent and allows you to buy crypto directly with euros, without intermediate conversions.
All countries have access to SEPA transfer, card, Apple Pay and Google Pay. In almost all of them you can also pay with PayPal, Bancontact and EPS, except in Germany, where neither Bancontact nor EPS are available. iDEAL | Wero, meanwhile, is only available in the Netherlands.
For now, Bitvavo is not available in Croatia, Cyprus or Greece.
KYC registration and verification on Bitvavo: how to verify your account
To use Bitvavo you have to verify your identity, a mandatory requirement by European regulations. The process is automatic and usually takes only a few minutes. First take a photo of your document with the camera (if it’s a DNI or driving license, also from the back) and then record a short video: you place your face inside the oval and read aloud the numbers that appear on the screen. To avoid rejections, ideally do it in good light and with the document at hand.
Passport, ID on card, driving license on card and residence permit with at least 3 months validity are accepted. The document is checked by a third-party provider and deleted at the end, and once verified you do not have to repeat the process even if it expires.
Bitvavo commissions: among the most competitive in Europe
Bitvavo’s fees are among the most competitive in Europe. Calculated based on your trading volume in the last 30 days: the more you trade, the less you pay. The standard rate is 0.15% for makers and 0.25% for takers. View all Bitvavo commissions
The maker is the one who leaves a limit order in the order book. The taker is the one who executes instantly, as in a market purchase. The maker always pays less. The tariff also depends on the type of market, and Bitvavo divides them into three categories.
Category A: cryptocurrencies in EUR markets
The one that will be used by most users, with pairs like BTC/EUR or ETH/EUR. You start at 0.15% / 0.25% and drop off as your volume increases.

Withdrawals on Bitvavo: euros without commission and crypto according to the network
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin (BTC) | 0,000017 BTC | 0,000017 BTC |

| USD Coin (USDC) | 1,1 USDC | 1,2 USDC |
If you deposit a cryptocurrency through the wrong network or an asset that Bitvavo does not support, you will lose the funds. In some cases they can help you recover them, with an administration cost of €50.
Security in Bitvavo: how to protect your funds and your account
When you store cryptocurrencies on an exchange, the first thing you want to know is where they really are. On Bitvavo, the vast majority are stored in cold wallets without an internet connection. Its custody is handled by two specialized providers, insured for up to $755 million, and large transfers always require manual approval from several people.
Other guarantees are added to this. There is a foundation, Stichting Bitvavo Payments, created only for Bitvavo with one specific purpose: to safeguard users' funds if the company went bankrupt. The platform is based in Amsterdam, complies with EU anti-money laundering and data protection regulations, and its code undergoes external audits whenever it changes significantly.
You can also reinforce your own account with these options:
- Two-factor authentication (2FA): a second step at login.
- Anti-Phishing Code: helps you distinguish real emails from Bitvavo.
- Devices and IP: You control where your account is accessed from.
- Address whitelist: You can only remove wallets that you have previously approved.
Our recommendation is to enable at least 2FA and address whitelist. Bitvavo does its part, but these two measures take a couple of minutes and cover the most usual risks.
Proof of reserves: 13 assets backed 100 %
To prove that it has the funds it claims to have, Bitvavo publishes a reserve test verified by The Network Firm LLP, an independent accounting firm. Confirms that the assets it manages cover at least 100% of what customers have in 13 assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and euros. The data are from March 2026 and are updated once a year. You can also check that your own balance is included: log in, choose a date range and download the report on the proof of reserves page.
| Security | Data |
|---|---|
| Regulator | AFM (MiCA) and DNB |
| Cold storage | Vast majority of funds |
| Custody insurance | Up to $755 Million |
| Large transfers | Multi-signature |
| User funds | Secured by Stichting Bitvavo Payments |
| Reservation Test | Annual, verified by The Network Firm LLP |
| Servers | Category 4+ (highest in the Netherlands) |
| Certifications | ISO 27001, PCI DSS Level 1, SOC 1-3 |
| Account Security | 2FA, antiphishing and address whitelist |
| Identity Verification (KYC) | Document + video, in minutes |
Staking on Bitvavo Earn: up to 25.40% APY with your cryptocurrencies
If you have long-term stored cryptocurrencies, Bitvavo Earn allows you to generate profitability in the meantime. You can stake over 65 assets and choose between two modes, depending on how much freedom you want to maintain.
- Flexible staking: you can trade or withdraw your cryptocurrencies at any time, with no lockdown deadlines. Earnings are calculated daily and paid every Monday.
- Fixed staking: you block your cryptocurrencies for a period in exchange for a higher APY. Profits are paid at the end of the term and your assets automatically revert to flexible staking.
Getting started is easy: enter the Earn Center and activate Automatic Win. From that moment on, all your eligible assets start to generate profitability with flexible staking, without setting up anything else. If you want to get more out of a particular asset later, you can switch it to fixed staking individually.
Here are the most profitable cryptocurrencies:
| Cryptocurrency | Profitability (APY) |
|---|---|
| Livepeer (LPT) | Up to 25,40 % |
| Orca (ORCA) | Up to 12,80 % |
| API3 (API3) | Up to 12,80 % |
| Cosmos (ATOM) | Up to 11,50 % |
| Chiliz (CHZ) | Up to 9,10 % |
And these are some of the most popular, with lower returns:
| Cryptocurrency | Profitability (APY) |
|---|---|
| Solana (SOL) | Up to 3,30 % |
| Avalanche (AVAX) | Up to 3,10 % |
| Polkadot (DOT) | Up to 2,10 % |
| Ethereum (ETH) | Up to 2,00 % |
| Cardano (ADA) | Up to 0,40 % |
Each asset shows its APY on the platform and that’s the performance you receive, even though the rewards of the underlying protocol may vary. In addition, there are protocols that do not distribute rewards as long as assets are linked or unlinked, but at Bitvavo cobras equally throughout the period. You can extend it in your Pricing Policy.
Important note: staking and lending are not regulated by MiCA, so the protections of regulated services may not apply.
Bitvavo Pro: the advanced version for traders
Bitvavo Pro is the web version of the platform designed for those who want to go a step beyond fast shopping. You enter with the same account, without registering again, and the commissions are exactly the same as in the normal version.
The most interesting thing about Bitvavo Pro is that it offers trader tools without becoming complicated. You can jump from one market to another with keyboard shortcuts. You can also resize the charts, order book and market data to assemble the panel as you like. And if you want to change an open order, you do it directly from the chart, without going through menus.
Web3 Wallet from Bitvavo: more than 15,000 tokens from the same app
Bitvavo has integrated a Web3 wallet into its app so that you can access more than 15,000 cryptoassets, including tokens that are not yet listed on the exchange, without installing another app. From there you can swap between networks such as Ethereum, Solana, Base, Binance Smart Chain or Optimism, and send or receive cryptocurrencies directly on the blockchain. Create it in just a few minutes: go to your profile, select "Wallet Web3" and set up an access key.
That’s right, it’s a different service than your Bitvavo account. This is your own safekeeping wallet: you control your assets and are also responsible for them. Transactions cannot be reversed, Bitvavo does not verify tokens and if you get the address or network wrong, you may lose funds. All fees are shown before confirming each trade.
Important note: the Web3 wallet is offered by Vavo Web3 Limited, an independent entity of Bitvavo B.V. Being in its own custody, it is outside MiCA and does not have the protections of regulated services.
Bitvavo for institutions: large-scale euro liquidity
Bitvavo is not only designed for individuals. It also has a specific service for institutions that want to trade cryptocurrencies in Europe with large volumes. Its main asset is liquidity: according to the platform itself, it moves more than €100 billion per year and concentrates over 50% of the crypto market against euros. For a large trader this translates into low spreads and bulky orders that barely move the price.
At the technical level it offers a low latency API compatible with FIX, REST and WebSocket. The account is financed by immediate SEPA transfers. High-volume traders have access to custom commissions and exclusive returns, and a dedicated support team accompanies the entire onboarding process.
| Profile | What Bitvavo offers you |
|---|---|
| Asset managers | Deep liquidity and a wide range of crypto assets, beyond bitcoin, to diversify portfolios |
| Private clients and funds | Custom solutions for large volumes, with dedicated support |
| Financial institutions | Secure, compliant infrastructure with access to high liquidity and digital assets |
| Liquidity providers | Robust API integration, competitive spreads and access to a reliable market |
| Companies | Crypto treasury management: risk coverage, payments and accounting optimization |
If you fit into any of these profiles, you can write to partnerships@bitvavo.com or visit their institutional page.
Customer service at Bitvavo: support and contact channels
Bitvavo’s support is mainly based on its help center available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch. It is organized by topics (accounts and verification, deposits and withdrawals, staking, fraud and security), so most questions are resolved without contacting anyone. If you can’t find the answer, you can ask Vavo, his AI assistant who answers 24 hours a day, or log in to receive personalized support and follow up on your requests.
You can also write to support@bitvavo.com, and for formal claims they have a specific page. What we haven’t found in your help center is a phone number, and that’s one of the reasons why we point out customer service as a disadvantage.
Bitvavo vs Kraken, Coinbase and Finst
Bitvavo fits very well if you operate in euros, but depending on what you are looking for you may be interested in another option. All four exchanges are MiCA licensed, so the difference is in the fees, the catalog and the type of user they are directed to.
| Exchange | maker / taker | Cryptocurrencies | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0,15 % / 0,25 % | More than 400 | Trading in euros and low fees | |
| 0,15 % fija | More than 340 | A simple commission, no tranches | |
| 0,40 % / 0,80 % | More than 600 | Extensive catalog and advanced trading | |
| 0,40 % / 0,60 % | More than 260 | Beginners who prioritize simplicity |
Finst is the most direct rival of Bitvavo: it is also Dutch and charges a fixed commission of 0.15%, without sections, although Bitvavo compensates with Bitvavo Pro and with sections that lower up to 0.00% as maker. Kraken has the widest catalog, with over 600 cryptocurrencies, and Coinbase stands out for its simple app and brand, but both charge higher fees on the first installments. If you’re looking for low commissions and advanced tools in one place, Bitvavo is the most complete option.
Bitvavo in 2026: is it worth it?
Bitvavo is one of the best options to buy and sell cryptocurrencies in euros from Europe. Combines very competitive fees, free SEPA deposits, MiCA license and strong security measures, with a reserve test verified by an independent third party. Earn also allows you to generate profitability with your cryptocurrencies and Bitvavo Pro covers those looking for more advanced tools, without paying more fees.
There are two things to keep in mind: customer support does not include a phone, and both staking and the Web3 wallet are out of MiCA. This is why we recommend it above all to European users who are looking for a simple, cheap and regulated platform to invest in euros. If you prioritize phone support, another alternative might work for you. However, the balance between cost, safety and user-friendliness leads us to score it 4.6 out of 5.
| Criteria | Weight | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Fees | 25 % | 4,9 / 5 |
| Security and regulation | 25 % | 4,8 / 5 |
| Ease of use | 15 % | 4,6 / 5 |
| Assets (Earn, Pro, Web3) | 15 % | 4,4 / 5 |
| Available Cryptocurrencies | 10 % | 4,4 / 5 |
| Customer service | 10 % | 3,8 / 5 |
| Final score | 100 % | 4,6 / 5 |
This review is based on actual platform usage. We have verified an account and made deposits, purchases, sales and withdrawals, and we have checked fees, limits and conditions with the official information from Bitvavo. Easy to use for beginners and offers a wide range of cryptocurrencies.
Personally, I consider Bitvavo one of the best crypto exchanges in Europe, especially thanks to its robust MiCA regulatory framework.
The charts could be clearer, and I'd like to see some additional data on cryptocurrencies. It would also be helpful to have more information on transactions and the average purchase price.
